Steadfast old Väinämöinen got his harp,

sat down to play, began to play beautifully.

Everybody starts to listen to that, to marvel at the joyous music,

the men in a good mood, the women with laughing mouths,

men with tears in their eyes, boys on their knees on the ground.

The people grew weary, the country folk get worn out;

all the listeners fell asleep and the onlookers sank down;

the young slept the old slept to Väinämöinen’s music.
