Steadfast old Väinämöinen got his harp,
sat down to play, began to play beautifully.
Everybody starts to listen to that, to marvel at the joyous music,
the men in a good mood, the women with laughing mouths,
men with tears in their eyes, boys on their knees on the ground.
The people grew weary, the country folk get worn out;
all the listeners fell asleep and the onlookers sank down;
the young slept the old slept to Väinämöinen’s music.
